The Sterling Lady Jets thwarted Falls City Sacred Heart's attempt at a fifth consecutive MUDECAS Championship on Thursday.

The Lady Irish trailed by two points with seven seconds left in overtime. A missed free throw by Sterling gave Sacred Heart one last chance. MacKenzie Witt dribbled the length of the court a got a shot up with one second left, but the shot missed its mark, sending the Lady Jets into celebration mode.
It's the second consecutive upset for the sixth-seeded Lady Jets. They knocked off third-seeded Bruning-Davenport-Shickley in the first round on Monday. With this win, they advance to Friday's championship game against Exeter-Milligan at 8:15 p.m. at the Beatrice City Auditorium.
Points were hard to come by Thursday for both Sacred Heart and Sterling.
The score was 4-4 after the first quarter. Colby Thies and Ella Wingert had two points each in that first quarter while Erison Vonderschmidt and Elizabeth Keithley combined for Sacred Heart's four points.
Sacred Heart grabbed a 6-4 lead in the second quarter after a basket from Vonderschmidt, but Sterling's Sydney Huls answered with a three pointer. Morgan Haner's jumper answered another basket by Vonderschmidt, making it 9-8. Sacred Heart's Danielle Bippes finished the second quarter scoring, making it 10-9 at the half.
Thies opened the third quarter scoring with a score in the post, but three straight free throws by Sacred Heart made it 13-11.
A basket by Haner and a three point play by Carly Wenzl gave STerling a 16-13 lead.
The two teams traded a free throw and Haner's jumper extended the Sterling lead to 19-14. Rachel Magdanz capped the third quarter scoring with two free throws, making it 19-16.
Thies extended the Sterling lead to 21-16 with a basket in the post, b ut Sacred Heart's Randee Witt came back with a three pointer to make it 21-19.
Neither team would score again until the end of the fourth quarter when Witt knocked down the tying jumper from the corner, sending the game to overtime.
Sacred Heart took the lead in overtime after Vonderschmidt's basket, but a basket by Malayna Wingert made it 23-23.
Thies broke the tie with two free throws with 1:15 remaining in overtime, making it 25-23.
Sacred Heart turned the ball over to Sterling, but the Jets turned it right back over to the Irish. Sacred Heart missed two free throws with 45 seconds left. The Irish got one last chance to tie it after a missed Sterling free throw, but it wasn't to be.
Thies led the way for Sterling with eight points while Haner had six, Huls and Wenzl had three each, Ella Wingert and Malayna Wingert had two each and Kaitlyn Wusk had one.
Vonderschmidt had 10 points for Sacred Heart while Randee Witt had five and McKenzie Witt, Elizabeth Keithley, Danielle Bippes and Rachel Magdanz had two each.
Sterling falls to a third place game against Freeman on Friday. That game is slated for 5 p.m. at the Beatrice City Auditorium.
