LINCOLN --The Beatrice Co-op swimming and diving team opened their season with a dual at Lincoln Northeast on Thursday.
The Co-op team consists of swimmers and divers from Beatrice, Norris, Fairbury and Freeman High Schools.
The girls team defeated Lincoln Northeast 117-66 while the boys team fell 132-51. Head coach Marian Wallen said she was pleased with how the first meet went.
"With many new swimmers on the team, getting a win was a great way to start off the year," Wallen said. "We also had six secondary state qualifying times. We were very pleased to win the girls portion of the meet."
First place finishes for Beatrice include the girls 200 Medley relay team of, freshman, Maya Moran, Senior, Makalah Scheele, Senior, Maddy Wagner and freshman, Mikwena Lierman; The girls 200 free relay team of senior, Maddy Wagner, freshman, Mikwena Lierman, freshman Crystal Craft and freshman, Maya Moran.
Other first place finishes include freshman, Crystal Craft in the 100 breaststroke and 200 Individual Medley, Freshman, Maya Moran in the 100 backstroke and 50 freestyle; freshman, Mikwena Lierman in the 100 freestyle; freshman, Elle Lenners in the 100 fly, and Junior, Jacob Mason in the 100 breaststroke.
Those achieving state secondary qualifying times were Junior, Colton Starck in the 50 freestyle; Freshman, Mikwena Lierman, in the 1000 freestyle; Freshman, Maya Moran in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
The girls 200 medley team of Maya Moran, Makalah Scheele, Maddy Wagner and Mikwena Lierman earned a secondary qualifying time as did the girls 200 freestyle relay team of Maya Moran, Crystal Craft, Maddy Wagner and Mikwena Lierman.
In addition to these performances, the team had several swimmers get personal bests at the meet.
Those include; Cailey Biesecker in the 100 freestyle, Trey Billesbach in the 50 free; David Gray in the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle; Blaine Kujath in the 50 freestyle; Cameron Knepp in the 50 freestyle; Matilda Saunders in the 500 freestyle; Colton Starck in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Madison Sweem in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle; and Joe Wright in the 100 freestyle.
"Having many talented upperclassman swimmers and many new freshman is going to make our team a very competitive one this year," Wallen said. "We look forward to seeing all that they can accomplish this season."
Beatrice will host their invitational on Saturday at the Beatrice YMCA. Diving will begin at 8:30 with swimming set to follow at approximately noon.
