The Beatrice girls basketball team couldn't get past Omaha Gross in the first round of the River Cities Conference Tournament.
The fourth-seeded Lady O fell to fifth-seeded Gross Catholic 50-45 in overtime Monday night at the Ozone in Beatrice.
With the loss, Beatrice drops to the loser's bracket where they will host eighth-seeded Ralston at 6 p.m. Thursday night in the Ozone. Ralston lost to top-seeded Skutt Catholic 69-22.
Omaha Gross advances in the winner's bracket to play Omaha Skutt Thursday night with the winner of that advancing to the championship game.
Beatrice controlled things early Monday night against Omaha Gross. The Lady O led 15-8 after the first quarter.
Gross scored the first two points of the game, but two free throws by Carley Leners and a three pointer by Olivia Aden made it 5-2.
After a basket by the Lady Cougars, Mak Hatcliff knocked down a three pointer to extend the Beatrice lead to 8-4.
Omaha Gross then made it 8-6, but another basket by Leners and a three pointer by Aden made it 13-6. Lexi Schwartz answered a Cougar basket with a basket of her own, making the score 15-8 after one quarter.
Gross outscored Beatrice 11-3 in the second quarter to take a 19-18 lead at half time. Leners had all three points for Beatrice in the quarter.
Addie Barnard's three free throws early in the third quarter offset a three pointer by Omaha Gross to make it 22-21. Leners then scored four of the game's next six points to give Beatrice a 25-24 lead.
The Cougars quickly regained the lead with a basket, but a three point play by Leners made it 28-26 in favor of the Lady O.
Gross scored the next seven points, though, to take a 33-28 lead. Schwartz ended the third quarter scoring with a basket to make it 33-30.
The Cougars immediately extended their lead to 35-30 in the fourth quarter, but three pointers by Aden and Barnard gave Beatrice the lead back at 36-35.
After a Cougar free throw, Barnard connected from long range again to make it 39-36.
Omaha Gross came right back with a three pointer of their own to tie the game up.
A steal and layup by Leners gave Beatrice a two point lead, but Omaha Gross came back to tie it 41-41 with 1:44 left in the game.
Barnard scored with 1:02 left in the fourth quarter, but the Cougars answered again. Beatrice got Leners the ball, but she was unable to convert as time expired, sending the game to overtime.
Omaha Gross took a 47-43 lead to start the overtime period. Baranrd's basket with 50.9 seconds remaining made it 47-45, but that would be the Lady O's last points of the game as they struggled to make free throws down the stretch.
The Cougars converted on enough free throws to win the game 50-45.
Leners led the way for Beatrice with 16 points while Barnard had 11, Aden had nine, Schwartz had four and Hatcliff had three.
Beatrice's record falls to 5-7 on the season while Omaha Gross improves to 9-4.
