The Beatrice volleyball team got their season off to a hot start Thursday night, sweeping Crete at the Ozone in Beatrice.
The Lady O won the match in straight sets 25-7, 25-17, 25-18.
Beatrice coach Cara Williams said she was happy with how her team came out and played the first match of the season.
"I thought we played well," Williams said. "We definitely saw a lot of good things, but we also saw what we need to work on before our next competition."
Specifically, Williams was happy with her team's passing and defense.
"I thought we dug and passed better than what I've seen in the past and that's good to see," Williams said. "We just need to step up our offense across the net."
The first set was tight early with Beatrice clinging to a 10-7 lead. The Lady O would score the next 15 points, though, to win easily 25-7.
Mariah Allen had four kills during that 15-0 run while Mak Hatcliff had two ace serves and a kill and Taylor Osborne added a kill.
Crete jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the second set, but kills by Osborne and Allen and an ace serve by Ally Thavenet made it 8-7. A Crete error followed by another kill by Allen extended the lead to 10-7. Two more Beatrice points made it 12-7 and forced a Crete timeout.
Beatrice scored twice more out of the timeout to make it 14-7. Crete fought back to within three at 14-11, but four straight Beatrice points, including three kills from Allen, re-extended the lead back to 18-11.
Crete would never get the deficit under six the rest of the way as Beatrice went on to win the set 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was tight early, but with Beatrice leading 9-8, they would score five of the next six points to extend their lead to 14-9 and force a Crete timeout. Osborne, Allen and Thavenet all had kills during the run.
Out of the timeout, Crete went on a 4-0 run to get within one at 14-13. Beatrice scored the next five points to make it 19-13. Ava Lovitt and Osborne had kills during the run while Devyn Burroughs had an ace serve.
Crete would be unable to get any closer than four points the rest of the way as Beatrice went on to win the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Allen had 13 kills on 31 swings to lead Beatrice.
"We were just trying to get the nerves out tonight and Mariah (Allen) just got," Williams said. "She showed it."
Osborne had eight kills while Thavenet and Burroughs had four each. Lovitt had two kills and Hailey Schaaf and Hatcliff had one kill each.
Lovitt had 14 assists while Osborne had nine assists. Thavenet had five ace serves while Hatcliff had three ace serves.
Defensively, Hatcliff had 22 digs while Thavenet had 10 digs. Thavenet, Burroughs, Schaaf and Allen had a block each.
Beatrice is now 1-0 on the season and will be in action again on Sept. 1 when they host the Beatrice Invite.
