Sterling swept Tri County Thursday night on their way to a MUDECAS B Division Championship.
The Jets beat the Trojans in straight sets 25-21, 25-13 at the Truman Center of the Southeast Community College campus.
In the first set, Tri County jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with Madison Freese collecting four kills during that early run.
A kill by Sterling’s Nicole Harms was answered by a kill by Tri County’s Taylor Cammack to make it 8-3.
Tri County held a 10-4 lead, but Sterling came back with five straight points to make it 10-9. Harms got the rally started with a kill followed by an ace serve. Colby Theis then pounded home three straight kills to get her team within one.
Tri County maintained a one point lead at 12-11 and then got a block from Brianna Connelly followed by a block by Freese to make it 14-11.
Tri County continued to lead at 17-14, forcing a Sterling time out. They extended their lead to 18-14 after the timeout, but Sterling scored four straight points to take their first lead at 19-18. Malayna Wingert go the rally started with a kill followed by a kill from H arms and an ace serve by Sydney Huls. Harms finished the run with a kill.
Tri County finally ended the run to tie it up at 19-19, but Malayna Wingert came back with another kill to give the Trojans the lead back.
With the score 21-21, Malayna Wingert got back-to-back kills to make it 23-21. Two Tri County errors ended the first set at 25-21.
Sterling vaulted out to a 7-3 lead in the second set, forcing an early Tri County timeout. Tri Coutny scored out of the timeout, but three straight kills by Harms started a 4-0 run, extending the Jet lead to 11-4.
Sterling continued to lead 17-11 forcing another Tri County timeout. Ella Wingert had two ace serves out of the timeout extending the Jet lead to 19-11. After a Tri County point, Theis registered back-to-back kills and Huls followed that up with a kill to make it 22-12.
Tri County scored to make it 22-13, but two kills by Huls and one kill by Harms put the set away 25-13.
The A Division championship match between Class D2 No. 1 Bruning-Davenport-Shickley and Class D1 No. 2 Johnson-Brock was not over by press time Thursday night. For those results, see Saturday’s Daily Sun.
Prior to the championship matches, there were four other matches played. In the A Division third place match, Freeman defeated Diller-Odell in three sets 25-18, 9-25, 25-19. In the B Division third place match, Meridian defeated Southern in two sets 25-22, 25-10.
There were also two consolation matches. In the A Division consolation final, Exeter-Milligan defeated Falls City Sacred Heart in straight sets 25-18, 28-26. In the B Division consolation final, JCC defeated Pawnee City in three sets 25-15, 11-25, 25-15.
With the win, Sterling improves to 6-4 on the season while Tri County falls to 5-5.
