Sisters Madi and Rylie Unzicker each hit home runs in the same inning in helping the Nebraska softball team complete play in the Lone Star College Classic with a 4-3 win against Omaha on Sunday in Houston.
Both homers came in a four-run second inning for the Huskers (3-2). Bri Cassidy led off with a double, and Alyvia Simmons reached on an error. Madi Unzicker, a senior, followed with a three-run shot over the center-field wall.
Rylie Unzicker, a sophomore outfielder, later hit a solo homer in the inning to push the lead to 4-0.
Omaha would rally. The Mavericks (0-5) scored two runs in the third, and another in the fifth.
Omaha had the tying run on third base in the sixth inning, but Husker reliever Regan Mergele, behind two strikeouts, prevented the Mavericks from knotting the game.
Mergele retired the side in order in the seventh to earn her second save of the season.
Freshman Courtney Wallace pitched two innings of relief and earned the win.
Rylie Unzicker recorded her first multi-hit game as a Husker, finishing 2-for-2 with a homer and double.
Omaha's Sydney Hampton pitched a complete game, giving up six hits while striking out three. Papillion-La Vista graduate Emma Dargy and Lincoln Southwest graduate Hailey Bartz each had two hits for the Mavericks.
