The Fifth Annual Tomato Tasting at the Beatrice Public Library will also be a celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. It will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 21, beginning with special children’s activities provided by the Arboretum at 4 p.m. There will be face painting and antennae making that will continue until the event ends at 6:30 p.m. The staff of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum will also provide tree tours of the Beatrice Public Library Arboretum starting at 4:15 p.m. The Beatrice Public Library site and building became a member of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum in 1992 at the first Arbor Day celebration at the current location. The Tomato Tasting and Judging will begin at 5 p.m. and conclude at 6:30 p.m.
The awards include favorites chosen by the attendees. Other activities during this special event include self-guided tours of the Library Pollinator Garden as well as samples of food made with tomatoes. Since the 5th anniversary gift tradition is items made of wood, pencils and wooden plant markers will be given away compliments of the Beatrice Public Library Foundation. The Nebraska State Arboretum will sponsor a drawing for plants that they have donated for this celebration.
Tomato growers are encouraged to bring 4-5 tomatoes (10 if cherry sized) to the Library for this event between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Aug. 21. This will allow the volunteers enough time to cut and group the tomatoes for the actual tasting. Tomatoes should be washed and placed in a disposable container. If the kind of tomato is known, please label it as well as giving the grower’s name, address and phone number. If the kind of tomato is unknown, it can be entered in the “mystery” category. For information about bringing tomatoes, contact the Tomato Tasting Coordinator at 402-239-4781. For more information about the Tomato Tasting activities, contact the Library at www.beatrice.ne.gov/library or 402-223-3584.
