Lincoln, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Transportation plans to contract 80 projects in 2027, impacting about 570 miles of highway and 90 bridges across the state. The $747 million Surface Transportation Program aims to preserve and modernize Nebraska's roadways, improve safety, and expand capacity.
The program includes contracted construction projects throughout NDOT’s eight geographical districts and budgeted state-performed maintenance. It is funded through state and federal highway user taxes and fees, with the number of projects depending on available funding, project readiness, and asset condition.
Key projects highlight a new Interstate interchange in Sarpy County, expansion of 10 miles of six-lane interstate between Seward and Pleasant Dale, and preservation of 20 miles of interstate between Utica and Hershey. Along U.S. Highway 385, 17 miles will see intersection reconstruction, pavement resurfacing, bridge repair, and new passing lanes to reduce delays caused by truck traffic and rolling terrain.

Notably, NDOT is introducing Digital Project Delivery on projects like a new roundabout at the intersection of U.S. Highway 34 and Nebraska Highway 50 and resurfacing 10 miles of U.S. Highway 83 near Hackberry Lake Spur. These initiatives aim to improve collaboration, streamline workflows, and deliver greater value for taxpayers.
NDOT continues progress on ongoing major projects such as widening of I-680 and I-80 in the Omaha metropolitan area, completion of the US-275 Expressway by 2028, construction of the Highway 77 Lincoln West Beltway interchanges, and work on the Capital City Connector Lincoln Interstate Bridges using a federal grant awarded in spring 2026.
