The Pickrell Picnic is a community group that comes together to host events and provide funds for community improvements.
Chairman Ross Trauernicht said the group has a history in the community.
“When I was a kid, the group planned the Pickrell Picnic,” he said. “We had a carnival back then. I just remember there was something to do, somewhere to go and something to look forward to. As a kid living in the country, the Pickrell Picnic was something we really looked forward to.”
Trauernicht said in about 2009 the group came together to improve the community and provide different types of entertainment.
On February 24 the Pickrell Picnic group is hosting musical bingo at the community center.
“It’s something new that we haven’t tried before,” he said.
On June 8-9 the Pickrell Picnic will have a variety of different types of entertainment including a pickleball tournament, cornhole and a UTV farm tour.
In September the Golden Ride Cycle Tour stops in Pickrell on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning. A meal is available for the cyclists in the park.
The Hillmark Christmas is usually done in late November.
“A lot of the people come out for the Christmas tree lighting and the kids like to visit Santa,” he said.
Some of the projects the group has helped fund include Pickrell Park, the community center and the Pickrell Memorial Veteran’s Park.
A new lighting project on Main Street is almost complete. It was funded by the Pickrell Foundation which was from the John and Henry Trauernicht Estate. The Pickrell Picnic group contributed $10,000 to the project.
The fire station has a new meeting area. The village gym is in the basement of the fire hall also. Many people have a membership and use the gym.
Approximately 25 people are involved in the planning of the activities with different committees.
